It’s been five years since Nike’s first Air Max Day in 2014. If that news doesn’t make you feel old, it’s probably because you’re not — which is perfect for the purposes of this article, because you might learn something.

Back in the Nike Air Max Command Femme day, before Apple Watches and platinum Travis Scott albums, Beaverton dreamt up a novel concept: a day dedicated to their most-famous line. Early celebrations were pint-sized by current standards. No sneakers were sent into space, no documentaries Nike Epic React Flyknit Femme were filmed, no VaporMaxes were plastered over Centre Pompidou, and nothing was ‘voted forward’.

So, how did we get from 2014’s humble beginnings to today’s titanic celebrations? Nike Benassi Femme Good question. Let’s take it one Air Nike Air Max 2016 FemmeMax Day at a time.

The inaugural Air Max Day festivities started on March 26, 2014, exactly 27 years after the first Air Max 1 hit the pavement in 1987. To take everyone back, Nike re-released the shoe that started it all… kind of.

The Air Max 1 released in 2014 would have been a true, one-to-one recreation to its forefather if it weren’t for a searing ‘Volt’ sole and ‘3.26’ printed on the tongue. Reviews were mixed, but everyone could agree it outshined the OG in the packaging department. Instead of a box, Nike delivered some shoes in huge Air bubble packaging, as Jacques Slade documented in an early video.

Beyond the product, Nike held events in key cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Shanghai, with the latter hosting a huge commemorative sneaker box. As a small win to their marketing department, the new holiday gave Nike their then most-liked Instagram post.

For atmos’ creative director, Koji, the inspiration was simple and straightforward. Coupling elephant print with vibrant jade accents, the combo was born from the atmos team’s love for the Air Jordan III and this idea of an elephant showering in the wild. Adding to the idea’s organic appeal, bringing elephant print to an Air Max was something Koji had longed to do before ever working on the 2007 collaboration.

Now a decade later, the design is back on shelves thanks to votes from all over the globe, complete with all the classic elements, and most importantly, a stamp Adidas Nmd Homme of approval from the atmos team that made it all possible.

The Nike Air Max 97 has had anniversaries before, but given that its 20th birthday ties in with a revival of late-'90s style, it’s a slightly bigger deal. This is one of those shoes that’s both loved and hated — an object that’s very much of its time, but one with an undeniable identity. Last year was about the Air Max 95, but next year belongs to the 97. From its inception to the strange forms it took throughout the years, Nike designer Christian Tresser’s creation has had an interesting couple of decades so far.

n retrospect — as the outcry over the sole switch of a NikeLab Ultra edition attest — the Air Max 96 was an incredible looking shoe, but it and its solid but nondescript sequel (also recently reissued) was utterly eclipsed by its successor. Following up Adidas ZX Flux Dámské the Air Max 95 had hindered its popularity, but the statement silver gleam of the Air Max 97 rendered the 96 into a series footnote. Being sandwiched between classics was a hindrance — especially when they kept being retroed due to audience demand.

Bizarrely, Nike made a few attempts to unite the heft of the Air Force 1 and the Air Max 97’s sleekness. Some fusions work and some fusions don’t. The Jordan AF1s were abysmal, but a few effective mashups of Nike runners and their bestselling hoops shoe emerged in 1998. A wear test premium leather 2007 edition of the AF1 with the full-length translucency on the midsole and that familiar AM97 tongue did the blog rounds. Another sample delivered a more overt union of shoes, bringing silver and mesh panels to the Uptown, alongside the 97’s heel and tongue straps — surprisingly, it’s Nike Air Presto Mujer not as trash as it sounds. That said, just because it’s an anniversary year for both shoes, we don’t need an official release for this one.
